Eivissa

Eivissa, otherwise known as Ibiza City, is the capital centre of the island. Situated to the south of the island, its one of the most picturesque cities in the Mediterranean, its old town has been awarded historic status by UNESCO.

It’s a fascinating city and holds a special charm, that attracts many visitors ever year, looking to see a more cultural side to Ibiza.

History
Ibiza town was founded by the Phoenicians 2600 year ago, and ever since then has been continually populated.

Around town
The busy port area is buzzing with an eclectic mix of nightlife, whereas in the marina the style is distinctly upmarket, with some of the finest restaurants on offer and luxury yachts in their moorings. The marina is also home to a casino and the famous Pacha nightclub.

The historic Old Town is held in by impressive 16th century walls, which hide a labyrinth of streets, restaurants, boutiques and a magical atmosphere, where the ancient meets the bohemian.

Cultural attractions
Sa Penya is the most distinctive neighbourhood in Eivissa, the cobweb of streets which flow out to the ancient walls of the city, today are where visitors flow to eat, shop and breath in the spirit of Ibiza Town.

Since 1942 the surrounding wall, which holds in the delightful architecture of the Dalt Vila neighbourhood, has been classified an ancient memorial; built in the mid 1500s, the main entry to the city is at Las Tablas Gate, where there was originally a drawbridge. You can also enter through Portal Nou, another interesting gate, where you can glimpse Puig de Mouns, one of the most important necropolis discovered today.

The magnificent cathedral is definitely worth a visit; built during the 13th and 14th centuries, it was constructed on the site of a former temple dedicated to Mercury. Plus there is the beautiful Santa Domingo church, constructed at the end of the 16th century for the Dominican order. The roof is particularly impressive, decorated with frescoes and mosaics.

Shopping
Shopping in Eivissa (Ibiza Town) is a fabulous experience, there are a mix of unique boutiques, which sell their one-off pieces to the beautiful people of Ibiza, mixed with bargain stores, and of course arts and handicrafts shops, where you can pick up hand-made pieces from Ibiza’s artist community.

Eating out
Eivissa, or Ibiza town, is home to a wonderful variety of restaurants; from food stalls in the port area, to the finest dining restaurants in the marina. There is cuisine to suit all tastes and budgets; but we recommend that you try to savour some of the city’s wonderful Mediterranean seafood restaurants: Alfredos, one of Ibiza’s oldest restaurants, or Can Joan Restaurant, where you will be served from the best Spanish kitchen.

Cuisine
Ibiza cuisine is a combination of fresh rustic cooking, seafood and tapas. Here you will have the opportunity to sample the fresh ‘catch of the day’, which might be lobster, crab, swordfish, or succulent grilled prawns. Paella is also a speciality, and other typical Spanish dishes such as tortilla, meat stews and tapas are abundantly available on Ibiza.

Climate
The summer season in Ibiza generally starts in the month of May and stays on average within the late 20ºc, early 30ºC right through until September. There is very little rain until November, but the winter does stay generally mild also; with some rainfall and chilly days from November to April.
